A symptom of social stagnation is lack of visionary ideas and creative policies. David Crow of the Melbourne Age observes that “In a political culture that punishes boldness, [political leaders] are treading warily on economic reform. Australians will be the poorer for it.” The result is that Australian political leadership seldom does anything that really matters. BLIND GUIDES Inadequate leadership can be endemic in the micro as well as the macro of society. I know of situations in which the principal is the least intelligent/educated person on the staff, all of which exceed that person in mental acumen and understanding. The reason for his is the same as the reason for the non-entity politicians we may find in government and opposition. People are chosen because they are not smart enough to see through the lies on which the institution is based. BLIND PEOPLE The chronic lack of vision described in The Age is not entirely the result of poor economic planning. The cause is deeper than this. It’s a moral problem in which self-interest and entitlement surpass an impetus for the common good. But there is a deeper cause than this. A lived ignorance and separation from the Christ of God vitiates wisdom and encourages folly and futility of the kind in which much of an entire nation chooses a cheat, liar and ignoramus as its president. The possession of ‘Jesus eyes’ as distinct from humanism or generalised Christianity imbues us with wonderful counsel and the wisdom of God. Leaders can have integrity of purpose and purity of heart when they are not blind guides of the blind.
